Fire Station Style Design Award 2008

Fire Chief Magazine-- Aurora Fire Department Wins the Gold

"This prestigious award recognizes the Construction Teams and Fire Departments from around the country for their achievements in Fire Station design and construction."

Aurora’s Fire Station #8 has received a GOLD level award by the Station Style judges in the shared facilities category. The station style awards recognize superlative work in five categories; career stations, satellite stations, shared facilities, volunteer/combination stations and station renovation.

Fire Station #8 is located on McCoy Drive in Aurora, Illinois.

The existing Fire Station #8 was in need of expanding and this new facility replaces the 30 year old station. It also provides a Customer Service Call Center for residents to better serve the City of Aurora.

The design concept was developed with participation of the Fire Department and City staff to optimize functionality

and gain the economic benefits of a shared facility. This new Civic presence on the eastern border of the City enables public safety and other City staff to better serve residents.

The building is organized into two volumes. The first volume is a brick and limestone one story mass housing the firemen living areas, dormitory, fitness room, and various support space for the fire station.

The second volume consists of two arching roof forms rising two stories, clad in metal panels and clerestory windows. The light filled spaces under these curving roofs include three apparatus bays, a mezzanine, the Community/Training Room, and public entry vestibule.

Design stated in October 2005, construction started July 2006 and was completed in August 2007.

The new Station is a result of thousands of hours of interaction between Aurora’s Fire Department, the Architect, PSA Dewberry and the Construction Manager, R.C. Wegman Construction Company. Their shared goal was to design and construct a facility to meet the unique needs and challenges facing America’s Fire and Emergency Services in our community.
